The first thing you are bound
to watch in SD870 is the LCD screen - 3" wide view angle - simply eliminates
the need of a seperate optical view finder. Undoubtedly it is even better
than a camera with 2.5" wide screen w/ optical view finder as it is not
that easy to compose photos using optical view finder.
Auto-mode settings is the best fit for taking still photos without following
a steep learning curve. You can simply start capturing photos without
much learning effort. It takes care of everything - focussing, flash,
exposure - all that is needed to capture professional quality photos.
Three different focussing modes - face detect, AiAF and center focus -
for focussing respectively on a face, or an object, or simply to focus
at the center of the frame; if SD780 has trouble detecting focus, it indicates
the same by chaning the color of frame.
The SD870 also offers better photo quality due to a wide range of available
pre-sets settings. Every photographer likes to ensure the same photo-quality
irrespective of varying climatic/lighting conditions, both for indoor/outdoor
shooting; Presets simply make the job done for you. It also offers you
quick reviews, delete and retake in case you do not get what you want
it to be. You can simply 'Play Back' while still in Shooting mode - navigation,
both back and forth, is simple; with online review/delete/retake feature
helps capturing best shots.
Digital macro zoom capability - 3.8x IS (image stabilization) and an
8 megapixel lens - is just perfect to shoot objects at any distance -
from the close-shot to far away landscapes vividly. Clean front-cover
containing built-in-flash, AF assist beam, red eye reduction lamp, and
self timer lamp - works like your personal assistant while shooting. Control
buttons are well-organised and you can hardly have any complaint regarding
their size/placement - extremely well researched to ensure best user experience
in terms of accessibility and operational comforts. Placing it on a tripod,
or attaching external flash, or even inserting an SD card, or battery
- it is far more easier because of the different sockets placed at the
bottom. Connecting SD870 outputs to TV/Printer/Computer is also extremely
easy.
Built-in IS( Image Stabilization, as the name suggests) capabilities
help you to get sharp images by providing protection against the most
unwanted shakes and jerks, which often result in getting blurry images.
There are three image quality settings- Superfine, Fine, and Normal;
SD870 offers saving images in SD, SDHC, MultiMediaCard, and MMCplus memory
cards. The number of stored photos depend a lot on capacity of the storage
device as well as photo quality you have chosen; images are saved as JPEG
and sound as WAVE file format. It has the capability to store movies as
well.
