Buying Tips

Understanding 4 C

Although it is not that easy to be an expert jewelry appraiser overnight; but we'll show you some simple methods so that you can avoid frauds, or deceptive claims. Let us start with 4 C: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat. The brilliance of diamond is largely due to its cut. There are generally 57 or 58 facets (Plane surface) each inclined at a small angle relative to each other. Cuts are man-made and demand highly skilled artisan for perfection. Diamonds are available in varieties of shapes - round ( most popular ), marquise, pear, oval, and princess cuts. The less popular shapes cost more. The COLOR of a diamond can range from Colorless to white to yellow. The color ratings of Diamonds are done using various alphabets! with Z indicates yellowish tint while D indicates colorless diamond. D,E and F color grades are more expenssive. Nearly 99.9% of diamonds radiate a blue fluorescence which is rather an asset. Clarity refers to inclusions or imperfection present in the stone. Diamonds without imperfection are extremely rare and therefore very much expensive. Each stone is tested against 10x magnification eyepiece to grade it in terms of clarity. The scale degrades from flawless(F1) to VVS1 and VVS2, VS1 and VS2, SI1 and SI2 and I1 and I2 at the other extreme end where inclusions are visible. Here V refers to 'Very', S refers to 'Slight' and I refers to 'Inclusion'; thus VVS1 means very very slight inclusion, and must be better than SI1 (Slightly included). It is recommeded to use VS2 or higher EGL clarity rating. Now comes Carat. Carat refers to weight of the diamond. 1 Carat equals to 200 milligrams (or 1/5 of a gram). So our basic lession is over.

Cut: 57/58 facets - difficult to detect.
Color: D,E and F color grades are more expenssive with price goes down as grade approaches 'Z' Clarity: F1 -> Flawless( Best )to I2, visible inclusion ( Worst )
Caret: 1 Caret = 200 milligram

Before you buy:

Ask for ORIGINAL GIA Certification, which is most accepted worldwide.

Ask for Product Certificate of Authenticity issued by the store in writing.

Double Check Warranty Period and Return Policy.
Payments:

Use Credit Card to Make Your Payments

After getting enough input regarding 4 Cs, you are probably ready to venture into a shop. But let me tell you how to examine the authenticity of a stone. Physical appearance: Shinning white with blue fluerecense, do not neglect to locate the firing brilliance in your stone.Check for possible imperfections using microscope or 10x loupe. Satisfied with the appearance ? Now check for authenticity. Examine the original GIA certification, it may incur some additional cost but that worths a lot to protect fake. OK, you have checked the GIA certification as well, now request the store to provide you written warranty/return policy/ other authenticity certificates. Even if you have enough cash, prefer Credit Card Payments.

So, you have done the hard work of purchasing the right diamond jewelry and that too after making some big savings. It is not a bad idea to get it appraised of with some third-party. In case things go wrong, you can take advantage of their return policies.

And finally, if you are not confident with your local jewelry stores, you can always consider making a purchase from some of the authentic online stores we have mentioned here.
